This is a collaboration between 6 European and 4 US universities that focuses on advancing the science base for layered, multifunctional surfaces. The dynamics of these layers are complex, rich in fundamental issues as well as interactive mechanisms ideally suited for interdisciplinary team research. In particular thermal barrier coatings are studied experimentally and theoretically. The KTH part is directed towards the phase stability and diffusion processes in so-called bond coats, the layer between the outer oxide layers and the underlying substrate super alloy.
