Physical Metallurgy

The hardness of cemented carbides may be drastically increased by reducing the WC particle size. However, even when a small grain size has been achieved prior to sintering it is difficult to avoid grain growth during sintering. It is thus clear that the carbide grain size distribution is very important for the properties of a cemented carbide material and it is thus crucial to enable the control of microstructure by suitable alloying and processing. The aim of the project is to form a rigorous basis for such control.
