Analysis of total tar in producer gas (»Add to Infobox)

The purpose of this project is to develop an analysis method to quantify “tar” (organic contaminants) in producer gases from biomass gasification.

Using solvent-free sampling and subsequent analysis by HPLC equipped with two different detectors will simplify the analytical steps and shorten the total analysis time. Tar consists of semi-volatile and non-volatile organic by-products having different functional groups. Many researchers in this field consider the presence of “tar” in producer gases as one of the most serious hindrance to commercialization of the biomass gasification techniques. Therefore, chemical analysis has been a matter of growing concern in research and development of gasification techniques to check that the tar concentration is within acceptable limits for a given gas application.
