Traditionally, antenna and microwave design and development have been performed by dividing the system into well separated sub-systems which are designed and optimised individually. Today, there is a strong trend towards compact and integrated antenna system solutions, which raise the need for new tools to design, optimise and evaluate the full antenna system. Such tools are important to achieve a cost-efficient overall system optimisation avoiding sub-optimization and decreasing the project risks.
An array antenna system is a very complex system, and to aid the development process simulation tools are necessary. Within the Chase pre-study Antenna System Simulator, initial work was performed using Matlab's Simulink for antenna system simulations for both communication and radar systems. The results are promising, and there is an interest in continuing this work and to spread the use of system simulations within the companies.
This project is a joint project between Chalmers Signal Processing group and the ETK group at KTH together with several industrial partners, including Ericsson, RUAG Space, FOI and SP.
